The idea of a Club for seniors originated with a paper written by Margaret Stanczak for her Master’s Degree.  In the early 90’s, a group of interested parishioners, led by Deacon Phil Fragassi, met together for a few months to develop a charter for an organization that welcomed potential members age 50 and above, with no particular limitations as far as residence and religious preference is concerned.  The Club, now known as The Shamrocks, is affiliated with St. Patrick Church  in Wadsworth, Illinois, and is subject to the Pastor, yet operates pretty independently, as long as the meetings and activities are coordinated with the general activity calendar of the Church.  The Club has grown to about 150 members, with an average of 85 members attending the monthly meetings.

Some of the service activities the Shamrocks are involved with include the following: a 50/50 raffle each month supports various charities, such as contributions to Mercy Home in Chicago to support weekly television Masses for more than 100,000 homebound people who watch them;  supporting a family in Peru for a year, donations to the wounded heros foundation; or other charities identified by members.  The Club donates to St. Pat’s School Scholarship Fund, and provides food baskets for needy families at Thanksgiving at Christmas.  Twice a year, members drive to Mercy Home to provide the congregation for the televised homebound Masses. And at Christmas, donations for members of Immaculate Conception Church in Chicago are collected from everyone attending the Christmas Celebration, and gifts from  the “Giving Trees” are collected and delivered to Catholic Charities.
